Site Situation & Problems
Dongguan is located on the Zhujiang Delta seen as an industrial city with “Blue Landscape”. The “Blue Landscape” is defined not only as of the surrounding geographic water landscape but also the “blue-collar” social stratum and their activities with the blue industrial constructions, which are resulted from the urbanization and industrialization in the past 30 years. The conflicts between urbanization, industrialization and nature reflect in fragmentation and instability of open space, which leads to “Blue Problems”. The “Blue Problems” include “Blue catastrophe” (waterlogging, landslide), “Blue working-class citizen”(emerging demand of public space for blue-collar workers) and “Blue industrial construction”(reuse of industrial construction during economical transformation).
Concept & Strategy
By using the “spatial morphology” theory we analyzed the urbanization and industrialization process from the large urban scale to the township scale and combined our design with regional spatial structure patterns. The concept “via BLUE LANDSCAPE” controls and protects the urban landscape by renovating the urban industrial transformation area to create a variety of dynamic and sustainable spatial structures. By considering the perspective of the blue-collar group we try to transform the industrial areas into active public spaces to improve the quality of social life for a floating population.
In short, by taking the political planning strategy, the industrial transformation process, the urbanization development, and the ecological catastrophe into account, we proposed a “blue“ scheme for a sustainable development structure of the urban landscape.
